Learn about Brighton and its past as the community celebrates the 150th Anniversary
of Brighton becoming a village. The Brighton Area Historical Society has wonderful
old photos that illustrate downtown Brighton over 100 years ago. The CoBACH Center
was the first town hall and fire station built in 1879. The town hall business was held
on the second floor. Many of the large old photos show only horse and buggies on
Main Street and Grand River Avenue.

In March 1867 the community of Brighton located within Brighton Township became
the Village of Brighton. It is proper to celebrate the spirit of Brighton and its early
families who struggled to create this wonderful village along the Grand River Indian
Trail within the banks of Ore Creek which meanders through Town.
August 13 will be a day of family fun! A community picnic at 1pm taking place within the
beautiful grounds of the Old Village Cemetery next to the millpond is being investigated.
The Brighton Area Historical Society will have several different tours of the Old Village
Cemetery taking place during the afternoon. There will be a brand new self-guided
tour of the gravesites of the (45) Civil War soldiers buried in this tranquil setting. The
tour booklets will provide detailed information on the life of that soldier.
Another tour will have 8-12 reenactors at different gravesites. Each person will be
dressed in their unique period clothing. You will learn about their lives and experiences
as they matured in Brighton and were influenced by growth and industrialization of the
late 1800s.
The Society will have a Special 150th Exhibit inside the City of Brighton Arts, Culture and
History Center. Many early Brighton photos will be exhibited. You will enjoy many of these
photos showing Main Street with horses and wagons and no cars. Main Street will be closed
for the Kiwanis classic car show around 5pm. The Millpond Park and surrounding areas will
be filled with music and music lovers as the Sunday evening Kiwanis concert opens at 7pm.
